Advocating for agroecology - now more than ever!

Promoting sustainable food systems in Eswatini

The previous project Agroecology in the middle of the capital Mbabane had impressively developed into a green oasis in the middle of the city of Mbabane after only one year. PELUM was all the more stunned when, due to a change of personnel in the city administration, their permit for the urban garden was withdrawn. They soon realized that they had no chance to appeal the decision and so they were forced to look for alternatives. They found one possibility in Ezulwini, a town between Mbabane and Manzini, where they were welcomed with open arms by the municipality. The municipality not only provides a suitable plot of land, but also contributes to the costs (fencing, hiring a guard).
The goal of the "new" garden remains the same: to disseminate agroecological knowledge and practices among PELUM member organizations and the Emaswati society in order to alleviate household food shortages and strengthen food sovereignty in the country.

Beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries of the project will be the 18 member organizations of PELUM, as well as thousands of farmers with whom they work. Indirect beneficiaries will also include the residents of Ezulwini, who will have free access to the center.
